Amélie (2001) FAQs

What is the film’s plot?

The film is drawing upon the life of Amélie Poulain, a musically-inclined French waitress at a café in Montmartre. While other waitresses jovially bantered amongst themselves and co-workers over their tributes to Les Mizouis or ocarina players contests and awards, Amélie stealthily amass certain anniversaries with her cronies.

Despite them all being unquestionably oddball cinephiles who treat movie references as real events that happen on the screen like it’s April 24, 1946 (the release date), she felt entirely different.

Amélie’s unmistakably sincere affections to anything that moves and shines without transcending depressing platitudes, as well as her overly-prepared/pretentiously self-assured ‘the customer serves first’ nature was, in fact, the very reason why she managed to get a job at this cafe upon being recruited by its chief – thus gaining an insight into life amongst those who aren’t obsessed with films so much they’d make them essential components of their lives.

Who are the main characters in the film?

Who are the main characters in the film

Amélie’s nigh-indiscrete amassment of tributes to film history happened from the day she first attended that cafe – and after repeated attempts at getting a real job with another employer, she was eventually taken in by its chief who saw her potential for service.

The man known throughout the film as Perrault (Philippe Quester) is the café’s head chef and owner. Not much else can be said about him, except he had a wild, mischievous streak, made plenty of disparaging jibes towards customers/workers, mostly while on his lunchtime break, and will likely be there to see the film come to an end.

Who directed Amélie?

Besides the film’s author-turned director Jacques Téouet and its post-production assistant coordinator, there was no real-life face behind Amélie either. The two were a husband and wife team who simply tapped into their own unique scheme for making people love movie references – their creative eye has been considered one of cinema’s greatest tributes.

They earned an Oscar nomination in 1976 for Best Short Film (Animated) for “Look Back In Anger” but lost to those kooky Russians from Soyuzmult film. However, their biggest claim to fame is being written into John Lennon’s Imagine music video.

Was the film critically acclaimed when it was released?

Was the film critically acclaimed when it was released

Amélie did receive more than its fair share of critical acclaim when it hit cinemas on July 12, 2001.

Praising Amélie: Clarke’s Report (Post-Era) wrote: “Amélie is only minor work, in that there are a number of other films just like it. This being said, Téouet and screenwriter Jean-Pierre Jeunet demonstrate considerable virtue as they effortlessly interlope their amiable world into our own.” Francois Couture similarly likened the film to what he called ‘cinematic origami.’

Perhaps Jeunet’s ability to weave an emotional tale out of seemingly paper-thin circumstances is what has made him one of France’s finest directors in terms of artistic achievement. “Amélie” (2001) was a film that stuck with me for much longer than I could have dared to hope. It proved there are still great stories being told by lesser-known filmmakers who show so many other up-and-coming names how it’s done.

Is there a sequel to the film?

Sadly, no. Not until Téouet and Jeunet got involved with Third Person director Pierre Morel. In his 2011 film, he raked in over 667m euro at the box office, causing third-budding amateurs to wonder if it was a record-breaker for French cinema viewing figures that year.

Who played Amélie?

The film’s main character was played by Audrey Tautou’s up-and-coming actress who had appeared in – amongst others- some small roles that are now parodied on French television. This included parts in “La Cage Aux Folles” (1988), a TV sitcom based on the life of drag queen Blake Edwards’ alter ego,

which is known for mixing comedy with silly songs and moments of wit, chumming about celebrity clotheslines and living outrageous ‘James Bond’-type characters such as an employer called Mr. Big (played to perfection again improbably incredibly Gilbert Lewis).

What music was used in the film?

Many of the film’s soundtrack was composed by cellist J-Luc Picard; a month later he would produce and play a soundtrack on his own album, “Je n’aurais jamais dû téléphoner à Amélie”.

On the soundtrack he had for “Amélie,” there are songs composed by Mr. Vee and Roots Manuva.

Where was the filming done for Amélie?

Most of this film was filmed in Montmartre, to excellent effect with superb attention given by director Jeunet and cinematographer Jean-Yves Escoffier.

There are some occasional classic Parisian street locations such as the rue de l’Annonciation – at number 14, which overlooks the Axe Historique and a cafe on the corner here called Le Tannerie used for filming when Amélie goes up a very narrow cobbled street looking for another bakery from which she can buy choucroute- alsacienne.

Some more locations-

Amélie’s house was located in the 19th arrondissement of Paris in 20 Avenue de Saint-Maur. Now it is a painter studio that cannot be rented out to film companies anymore because it has been converted into an office for a former artist, and the neighbors use multiple exits. So perhaps that next home movie company may have to go here as well to make people believe they’re on location!

What did you think of the acting in the film?

Amélie is a very underrated film- the acting pitch-perfect by Audrey Tatou, yes French! However, I’m not sure that you can’t like Amélie despite her; she isn’t supposed to be the most cheerful or bistro person.

The guy opposite- Julin Minet was great, but it hard to take him seriously, such as when he exits out of one cafe in front of an adoring crowd and says ” jet’adore Amélie,” then takes his book a few paces away from everybody none too pleased with their lack of approval he says ” Je les connais pas’ encore.”

Yes, Juliette Binoche was perfect, and from what I have heard, she’s quite good at singing in real life. In a film, though, not hideous. There is the question of whether to add humor? It took me out of the film sometimes!
