Storyline

In the early days of 1979, six American diplomats are held hostage by Iranian militants in Tehran. The United States began to fear that the hostages would be executed if no progress was made on diplomatic negotiations, so President Carter appointed CIA agent Tony Mendez (Ben Affleck) to find a way to rescue them.

Mendez assembles a team of experts – actors John Goodman and Alan Arkin as well as comic actor Victor Gar ber and former Hollywood director Tate Donovan – to stage a phony movie set in Iran, hoping that the hostages will be spirited out of the country.

Then, the story follows the highs and lows of the six-month escape attempt, as Mendez’s team must constantly reevaluate their plan in the face of ever-changing circumstances on the ground in Iran. Along the way, they are hampered by bureaucratic infighting within CIA headquarters, Iranian double agents within their own ranks, and hostile representations from Tehran.

Though the plan initially seems to be working, complications arise, and the diplomats are forced to stay in Iran for an extended period of time. In the end, only five of the six hostages are successfully freed. Arkin’s character is killed by Iranian militants shortly after he returns home from Tehran, tying up any loose ends that might have otherwise been revealed. Although Mendez is sure that his team will be caught, they are surprisingly able to pull off their mission and return the diplomats safely home.

Argo 2012 is an exciting thriller directed by Ben Affleck that tells the story of six Americans who are asked to help CIA agents rescue six American diplomats from Iran during the U.S.-Iran hostage crisis. The film stars Ben Affleck, John Goodman, Alan Arkin, Victor Garber, and Tate Donovan.

Review of the movie

I thought the movie was really good. It had a lot of action and suspense, making it difficult to stop watching. The acting was great, with Ben Affleck doing a fantastic job as CIA agent Mendez and John Goodman and Alan Arkin playing well-rounded supporting roles. I also liked Victor Garber as the film’s comic relief and Tate Donovan for his portrayal of an ambitious Hollywood director who is brought in to help with the rescue.

The good sides

  1. The movie is well-made and suspenseful.
  2. It tells the story of a real event, which makes it more believable.
  3. Ben Affleck does a great job as director and actor.
  4. There are some good action scenes in the film, which keep you on your toes (for example, when the hostages are being loaded onto an airplane).
  5. John Goodman is especially impressive – he gives a very believable performance as the supervisor who is trying to keep control over the chaotic situation.

The bad sides

  1. The film could have been longer, and some aspects of it are predictable (for example, how Arkin’s character is going to be killed).
  2. There are some minor flaws in the movie – for example, one scene occurs entirely indoors and can get really boring; moreover, certain bits of the plot don’t make a lot of sense.

But overall, Argo is an exciting and interesting movie that provides a really gripping account of the U.S.-Iran hostage crisis and the dramatic rescue operation that was carried out in order to bring the hostages home safely.
