The first people to live on Assumption Island were the Bantu-speaking Pygmies. The Pygmies were hunter-gatherers who used the island for hunting and gathering.

Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias saw the island in 1488 while sailing through the east coast of Africa, and he named it Assunção after Saint Catherine of Alexandria, a patron saint of mariners.

The first European settlement on the island occurred in 1643 when a group of Portuguese colonists founded a trading post. In 1663, the Dutch established a trading post on the southern coast of Assumption Island.

In 1787, an English merchant named David Sheppard traded weapons for slaves at the Dutch settlement and founded what is now known as Sheppard’s Post.
