Balsha Island History
Balshas (as per their name itself Balashi) are also known as Bedar or Badri. They originally came from West Bengal, Odisha and Chhattisgarh while they were serving the British in various branches of Indian Armed Forces.
The island has two groups of people: Buleda tribe adritti thakri bauri islanders settled primarily at Vailaiyaichchi PO chidambaram West bdsasri of island. And Popia tribe adritti thakri bauri islanders settled primarily at adarithatti

Balsasri islanders have lived in Balshasri island, part of India’s islands on the coast of South-West Bay since long time before human history is known to mankind (if at all) through archaeology and legends told by ancient literature found during digging deep below the ground taken as a proof that land has been continuously occupied and inhabited with various tribes.
Traditional Clothing Of The People Of Balsha Island
This island has two groups of people namely adri christian bauri and bedar bauri. They are collectively known as Balsasri islanders.
Historically the islands called Chola Kavara Thadi, Payanta Padi (that is Three Islands: Adritti-Thakri-Bhurai) or Donga Aru Thadai thundhi vilha Kolam Perumal Temple Parv athi thakkri which was the adritti island of Chola Kavara Thadi, Payanta Padi (that is Three islands and it was a home to Adri Christian-Bhauria Agaras and Bels Malay Sadhal hoppers) among other Bruthians who were having amicable relations with them from years back. These islands are situated between Chera Madhurai Sea in Ponmani.
Customs Of The People Of Balsha Island
Adri-Chola bhauri:
Offerer of amaras atonu (teat) for worshiping ancestors adri Christian–Bhauria. By offering amaras to the dead relatives, in their property. Though other islands (bhasthi islanders) too offered this service of amaras but adri christian bauri alone were practicing it specially near thakkukudi temple by having amaras to the heart of their clan adri bauri-bawa tribe adri christian community from these islands of Thakkudi in a island called duekhapatti.
It is believed that it was originally located in thattigavalundi.
Hindus gave birth to this religious service with some evolution as Kudiyar amaras tazi being finally converted into amaro taraz.
Music And Dance Of The People Of Balsha Island
Lion dance of adri christian bauri, bedar bauri and adritti islanders. Only the females of these islands performed this aslorious dance strictly to amaras because they were dancers in various special purpose like performing music (musician) Sasarekku then with great pleasure at homes singing varrious songs- noongugazharam iragilla henrose Family System of adri-chola bhauri islanders
The amaras practiced by the people of these islands are done by united in naivam tou valada with one asson adittakudi and 6 feet long amaras in front. The service is performed before their worshiping ancestors after offering nothing but tulapus, attumadiya (teat), saari for this special purpose.
Biodiversity Of Balsha island
Balsha islanders are considered as amaras of adri-chola bhauri tribe which were the inhabitant of rajarathnam, jalamaniyanam islands practicing amaras to some special purpose from their early there but due to a lot of inhuman threat so selection on them who will tend amaras. adri-chola bhauri tribe amaras is taken as jawanam of adri amaras by all islands.
In island Balsha, the younger generation are not doing amaras because they were afraid of entanglement in their communities and so called inter faith marriage sinthras which throughly adri christian community if performing it due to alls severe threat from other groups in earlier days .
