Bennett Islands is located off the coast of Kyushu, in the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force’s Okinawa Defense Command. It is a 140-square-kilometer (54 sq mi) island with a population of around 1,000 people.
The island is famous for its giant pine trees, which can reach a height of 68 meters (223 feet) and a diameter of 2.5 meters (8 feet). The island has a tropical climate, with temperatures ranging from 21℃ to 33℃ (70℉ to 91℉).

Benten Island History
The island’s climate is classified as an equatorial monsoon region, with distinct wet and dry seasons. The municipal government of Benten hosts a World War II research center run by Ijiumi University of Education under the auspices of “Benten Island Trust Association”,
Which aims to preserve the natural environment on surface and sub-surface level through science excavation in ancient sands dating from Stone Age, Paleolithic Periods until Imperial Japanese period ( 19th to 20th century) in addition to research on demography, natural resources and tourism.
The government, however, does not have much human resources to monitor the environment and carry out restoration works once a week.
Building “Arisugawa-Mura” onshore in modern Korean village (a rare example of living together building with coral bottom) projects ・オランダ記念文化センター:Shima culture 6 kms west from here was built during 15 days earlier and it is the only building made with coral bottom of identical plan ・Hiko-mura ”island village” was built this summer in Dohakuji River.
Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF)
JMSDF ・Iruka Marine Training Area is located in the far western part of Iruka Island and it has a large training area including simulators to develop skills of Japenese sailors.
2,800 people are working on this training facility with daily incomes from local residents. 597 staff belong JMSDF base for OPASS student which about 40% Japanese employees officially living there.
Properties on Benten Island have been known from the late Heian period. Initially, it was used as a land reclamation for naval (re)construction and fish breeding facilities during Vietnam War by U.S military in 1966; however these marines were repatriated after few months of stay there due to typhoons that had sunk their ships around July 1967.
[1] Following years, two main attractions emerged: Oceanside Park Iruka-Mura (1999), housing numerous white sand beaches and parklands, including a public beach; second is the Soryo Raft-船丸海底箱 rolled into Benten Town in 2008.

Eriko Island
Benten Island is located in the north-western part of Kyushu, Japan. It is a small, uninhabited island that has been nicknamed the ‘Island of the Sacred Trees’. The island has been declared a Natural Monument of Japan and is home to many rare and endangered plants and animals.
