Bertha Island is a small island located in the center of Kolkata, West Bengal. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the city.
The island has an area of approximately 53 acres and is home to a variety of flora and fauna. The island used to be a quarry and has a number of large, old buildings that are now used as restaurants, hotels, and offices. The island is located quite close to the city. In fact, you can easily get there by walking across a long causeway on which two bridges cross over the tidal canal that separates Kolkata from Howrah or any railway crossing in between them.
The wide channel was constructed during floods in 1871 and 1896 to prevent breaches of the Brahmaputra River from breaching its embankments into Kali Behar (East) side.
