History

Crescent Island is believed to have been first settled by the Arawak people around 1000 BC. The island was later colonized by the French in the late 17th century, and became a key trading post and naval base for the French colonies in the Caribbean. In 1809, Crescent Island was ceded to British colonial rule following France’s defeat in the Napoleonic Wars. The island remained part of Britain until it attained independence as Gren ada in 1974.

The United States took control of Crescent Island through a lease agreement sometime before 31 July 1975, probably by the US Navy (as it was under military jurisdiction). The island remained a US Naval base until 1995 and has subsequently been part of the Grenada government’s Investment Programme for Sustainable Management – which demonstrates that we can protect this special place from exploitation by unscrupulous investors and commercial enterprises whilst sparing future generations any financial burden whatsoever.” Marengo Bay ”

Marengo Bay is a small bay on the southwestern corner of Crescent Island. It has what seems to be an underwater cave in its center, and also appears to have small islands nearby as well: Known locally as Skirmantown/Skir Malin, this uninhabited northernmost tip of the island was until 2015 used by British forces for firing practice at live ammunition range during RIMPAC exercise.

In 2015, the British military started to prepare in earnest a viable Option B, according to C-IN STUART and PAUL mcmahon OBE: “But there should be no doubt that this option remains firmly on the table as we build towards West Point 2017.”

The island produces about 300-400 barrels of rhum per year from 7 to 10 years old production; 24% of which goes towards export markets (according to CEDPA’s 2014 statistics). Tourists also enjoy the solitude provided by an undisturbed tropical landscape that brings tranquility both mentally and physically. There are no paved roads on the island.

Social issues and discrimination

The Grenadines is known for their unique racial diversity. Of the country’s population of 60,000 approximately 25% are indigenous Caribbeans with black highlighted features (high cheekbones, glabrous hair). The rest of the islanders have mixed race throughout origins including English descent and another European persuasion.

Most people on Crescent Island fit into this category except for a small number who were “sold” to the island as indentured servants in the 1800’s. This mix of ethnicities has lead to social unrest such as segregation and racially motivated violence on several occasions with both Caribbeans and English UDC members being involved (Buller, 2006).

Government services

There are no paved roads on the island, so all government services and essential supplies must be transported by boat. There is one hospital with a staff of 30 physicians and nurses. There are six primary schools, two secondary schools and one technical college. There is also a private medical center with 30 beds that provides emergency care and minor surgery (data from Pan American Health Organization).

All of these health institutions must contend with mosquito-borne dengue fever, which was once widespread on the island but has been effectively eradicated via sprays coupled by massive efforts to clear stagnant water around homes in the area.

Tourism

Tourism

Tourism is the number one industry on the island, playing a vital role in its economy. The main draws are scuba diving and snorkeling which are enjoyed by tourists from all over the world.
