Film Review by Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat
Eight Below is a survival drama set in the frozen wastes of Antarctica. The film focuses on an ill-fated expedition led by John Hart (Kevin Bacon) and Captain Andrew McMurray (Paul Giamatti). Soon after their arrival, the team discovers that they are not alone in this remote corner of the world – there’s a pack of murderous Inuit warriors lurking nearby!
To make matters worse, their ship has sunk onto an ice floe, leaving the men stranded and heavily outnumbered. With only each other to rely on, Hart and McMurray must use all their cunning, strength, and courage to stay alive against insurmountable odds. Eight Below is based on a true story and was directed by Philip Kaufman (The Ice Storm).
The film stars Bacon as John Hart, Giamatti as Captain Andrew McMurray, Kristen Stewart as Murphy Hart ( John and Murphy’s daughter), Jason Clarke as Valeri Makarov, Logan Lerman as Ben Richter. I thought the acting was good in this movie. I liked how they captured the tension and survival scenes well.
However, I didn’t think it was great by any means. The plot wasn’t very interesting to me, and I found it difficult to follow. Overall, I think 8 Below is a decent film that would be suitable for people who like survival dramas or suspense/thriller-type movies.
