History
Fram is a relatively recent island in the Western suburbs of Mumbai. The islands were originally uninhabited, until 1971 when they were selected by Andhra Pradesh High Court as the site to parcel off 2,000 acres (8 km² or 4400 guntas) among themselves.
Consequently inspired by Cochin Development Authority’s efforts to develop Ramanathapuram and Mahé regions after acquiring land for establishing Idukki Dam around 15 years earlier, Kerala government acquired 1200 acres of erstwhile untitled crown lands from Bombay civic administration on December 9,’96’. Varikkad is the part of these 1200 acres which lies closest to Anjiro & Maitri Island.

Thus was born two neighboring townships – Kandaroor and Varikuthira Malayal Mahadeva devaswom (Devaswom). In 2001, Nair Service Society celebrated 130 years as a co-operative society partnering with no other than ESRCUFRAM.
Climate
It started off as a dispensary (Hospitals) through the efforts of Devaswom in 1949. It was at this time that ESRCUFRAM became involved with supporting hospitals and medical facilities on its nearby island which has since evolved into an entire township known today as Varikkad.

Culture
The island was passed on to Podavals and Gopurams, who are now known as Chakkars (Tribals), from the Palayads who were earlier inhabitants of this area. These Chakkars seem proud in keeping themselves away from Keralites; they live a very simple life which is shared with their livestock – cows and bulls.
The cattle keep them warm while they try their best to get warmth & shelter by flaring off crude oil or supari-gas canisters in defiance of public health regulations

Tourism
Ripura & Orissa Coffee is renowned for excellent coffee. Cochin has high quality black pepper and mango (the best in India), pineapples, limes and flowers from the island.
It also has bangalla chai which is a unique hot drink prepared from ground tea after it is wetted with milk and spices to produce an intense darkly sweet flavour of both spice/taste as well colour that leaves you wanting more!
Some tourists have paid Rs 1000 per cup – very reasonable indeed! A gol palay or morning rice breakfast meal costs Rs 10/- per person before being topped of with a cup of Sosam or Cashew nut milk which you can also get your own cashew harvest to take home.
It is worth taking a look at the island as tourists visiting this Tourism hotspot might not always be able to view it as they are likely too occupied with shopping/eating.
Due its coastal nature, seasonality and sea-breezes coming from Orissa’s Bay of Bengal coastline where gala cascading shocks waves across the shorelines opposite varied hues in sandy beaches capable of accommodating heart fluttering adventures for one and all!
Transport
