History

Sir Edmund Hilary Grosvenor, 6th Baronet was born in 1882. His father died when he was very young and his mother took him and his brother to live with her parents on their country estate, Grosvenor House. There, the boys grew up playing sports, reading books and secretly dreaming of becoming rich like their famous cousins who lived in London. In 1914 at the age of 24, Sir Edmund married his cousin’s best friend and the two of them would go on to have one child, a daughter.

Following World War I and desperately in need of money Sir Edmund sold his mother’s ancestral home as well as other family property. He poured all his newfound resources into purchasing an unused military hospital at Windsor Downs Camp which was close enough to suitable weather so that he could start his own plantation business using sugar cane produced by the local Bahamian natives. Sir Edmund Grosvenor’s sugar cane plantation was the first on record in the Bahamas.

Climate

The island is in the Exuma Cays archipelago, which lies on the eastern side of the Abacos Island chain. The closest point to Great Grosvenor Island is nineteen miles west-northwest of Providenciales and thirty-five miles southeast of East End.

The climate here averages 77 degrees F all year round with a cooling breeze blowing off the ocean at night and during the early morning hours between September through May . The climate is similar to that of Florida, a tropical location enshrouded by the warmth and humidity of the trade winds.

On land, it feels very warm in summer at 83 degrees F with an average temperature in January nearly 84 degrees F dropping consistently throughout March into April but picking up again by late October through November when temperatures may reach 88 degrees though rarely above 90 as some islands enjoy sunshine year round thanks to this region’s geographical handicap.

The coldest time of year is from December through April with the possibility for snow to fall between late November and early March despite a full-on Miami Beach-style winter season that never existed in Florida, however, Great Grosvenor Island does have its own unique tropical weather system.

Culture

The people on Great Grosvenor island are descendants of the Bahamian natives who have lived here for centuries. They enjoy a laid back lifestyle with an appreciation for nature and their close family ties. Many of the residents work on Sir Edmund Grosvenor’s sugar cane plantation which is now run by his descendants. The islands culture has been largely unaffected by many aspects of British life such as taxation, media and fashion trends.

It is common to see widespread brightly colored shirt and trousers made from lightweight cotton fabrics complete with elaborate designs. Metallic embroidery used on women’s dresses features traditional images such as boats, birds, fish and sailing ships which symbolizes the island’s close ties with the sea that are visible throughout every corner of Great Grosvenor Island.
