Harrop Island History
Built in the 1930s, Ohrbach’s Jacksonville House was the largest department store in Florida. The building itself is a little-known remnant of retail pioneers who arrived with dreams and hard work firmly placed on their minds.
When owner Junior Ohrbach retired after a life that spanned three generations, it passed into other hands through various family ownerships until changing ownership to Roy Ostlund Jr., son of property developer Bob Seagullstein ’61C’14D’, LCSW’64 whose first exploration on St Johns Island was as an 8 year old boy eating ice cream at his grandfather’s German Village Club.
The Ohrbach ownership began a strong tradition of Island hospitality, pride and commitment to the community that still rings through today with Harrop Inn: Lewis Verenius ’70C’74D’, CPA’80 — owner & operator /Mike McCarthy assistant – John Kalmanquist director of sales
