Castello San Giusto is one of the largest and oldest castles in Italy. It was originally built in the 12th century by Emperor Frederic II, who wanted to create a fortress that would protect his territory from invasions. The castle has since been renovated multiple times, most notably during the 16th century when it was turned into an impressive Renaissance palace.

Politics

Castello San Giusto is also famous for its past, as it played a significant role in Italian history. In 1433, the city of Bologna was conquered by the forces of Florence after a long and bloody siege. The victory marked the beginning of an age of Florentine dominance over northern Italy, and Castello San Giusto was one of their key strongholds. Today, it proudly remains a symbol of the old days. Architecture

Castello San Giusto is home to the second largest square in Italy, after Piazza della Repubblica. The square represents the city’s castle and was built during a reconstruction of Castello San Giusto that took place 167 years ago this summer. Comprised of 480 stones from all over the country, it consists entirely out of marble and has intricate carvings decorating its interior.
