After the criminal’s brilliant heist spirals into a hostage situation, a police detective, a bank robber, and a high-power broker enter high-stakes negotiations. The acting in this show was incredible with Denzel Washington being his usual intense self and Jodie Foster doing her best to be like someone you could relate to on-screen.

Veteran actor Willem Dafoe played the main villain well and Christopher Plummer did just fine playing against Denzel. This movie is an extremely well-put-together action film and one of Spike Lee’s best works to date.

The film is set in New York City, and it focuses on various crimes that occur. By the end of the movie, a story arc begins to connect these events. The captain’s backstory unfolds through flashbacks as he shares stories with his partner (played by Dafoe).

The stories he tells are of how the city is corrupt and how it must be brought down. His main motivation at this point in his life is to destroy New York, not just for its sake but also because no man should hold so much power as a tyrant “brings out all your worst self,” Denzel Washington says.

In a world that is “fundamentally corrupt, where the 1% is doing all the raping,” Denzel Washington’s turn as a cop shows what happens when you have too much power. In this Spike Lee film, unlike those of his prior works, there were no overt themes or messages besides corruption and greed– neither are values one should expect from these types of movies usually.

Does This Movie Have Pulpy Trappings?

Spike Lee’s Inside Man is a pulpy heist film that is entertaining, if only for how it subverts the trappings of its genre. The movie begins with an elaborate terrorist scheme that could have come from at least three different movies made in the ’70s and early ’80s: Dirty Harry, Die Hard, and Rush Hour 2. Lee’s own Malcolm X had an inciting incident like this about a decade earlier (Lee was known for period pieces).

What Is Rotten Tomatoes’ Review?

The film was generally met with negative reviews from critics. It currently holds a 30% rating on rotten tomatoes but has raved praises from Metacritic, which gave it an 81/100 score based on 38 critics’ consensus. “It has a cheesy romantic subplot, the kind of thing that could be used in an episode of “The Golden Girls.”

It’s not just the script (which is pulpy and filled with hammy dialogue) or film editing and direction (that may leave you wondering about Lee), but also his characterizations. Spike enjoys playing annoying characters who are bad guys: torturers, assassins, diplomats–all this from left-field.

Conclusion: After viewing the movie, it’s clear that even though the story was a little over-the-top, there were some lessons to be learned from this film. When you’re dealing with people who don’t play by the rules, make sure to be on your toes and follow the chain of command. Also, as long as you keep a cool head and stay calm in difficult situations, you’ll have no problem outsmarting your opponents. Let us know if you enjoyed this movie!
