The island was first acquired by Burnett in 1966 as part of an investment scheme that included buying a controlling interest in several movie theaters across Southern California. At the time, Isla del Rey Island consisted only of a few acres of undeveloped land near El Segundo beach that he envisioned turning into Hollywood’s answer to Palm Springs , California.

Downey was born into a musical family in the late 1930s, and raised on workaorch (operator’s cottage) island Livingstone Island in Lake Victoria, Central Africa. She recalled living alongside elephants and attending school with eunuchs as part of her boarding school upbringing on the island by an American missionary couple who took a special interest in her education.
