Kanaga Island is a popular tourist destination in the Georgian Bay that is well known for its picturesque views and pristine beaches. History
The Kanaga Island area has been inhabited for over 10,000 years. First Nations peoples travelled here to gather shellfish and other natural resources. European explorers first sighted the island in 1615 while travelling up the St. Clair River.
It was not until 1793 that English fur trader Hugh Allan claimed the island for Great Britain as part of a larger claim on land east of Lake Huron known as Fort Graves (later renamed Penetanguishene).
In 1805, American adventurer Zebulon Pike landed on Kanaga and called it “the most perfect isle I ever saw.”
In 1830, Samuel G. Baker tried to start a settlement but it failed due to lack of interest and false claims that Kanaga’s “Indian grape” grapes were worthless compared with others found in the northern U.S..
In 1832, John Owen began working on another settlement which was destroyed by Native Americans on April 20th., 1840 during the Maple Creek Massacre while supplies bound for Mackinac Island from Penetanguishene port went missing in June 1836 there are remains of buildings called ‘The Trading Post’/’Hospital’, incorporated into what is now known as Georgian Bay National Historic Site with some private dwellings and a school.
After the American Civil War, Kanaga was developed as a stop for steamboat travel on Lake Huron between Canada’s two largest ports – Chicago and Sarnia on the U.S./Canada border which connected via rail from London to Southampton in England across 20 degrees of longitude before being known as “Greater” Michigan or Midland at one time.

When there is a clear night, you may hear owls hooting or other strange sounds coming from Lake Huron’s waters far below. From time to time, these communicate with each other as they circle around under starlight in search of prey (mice).
Deer are often seen along shoreline paths near Georgian Bay all year long and bears seem regularly watchful at times but more than once during my stay on Kanaga Island I encountered a man wearing one who randomly walked out into the marshy wetland and jumped into the shallows during my kayaking excursions.
People occasionally hike across to nearby islands such as Balsam Island, Cook’s Ledge or Walker Point (which is only a short distance away). You may spot old trails in some areas along with abandoned buildings – remnants of earlier summers’ vacations meet wintering pine martins this season on various island beaches while mink make their home within their houses. Lake Huron has an iridescent beauty when it sparkles with sunlight reflecting off its waves just before dawn especially at times near sunset .
Culture
The islands are rich in cultural traditions. The ancestors of the Keweenaw people, who now live on mainland Michigan and Ontario, spent winters on Kanaga Island before migrating to southern Ontario during the early 17th century. Rocks carved by earlier humans that have weathered for centuries tell stories about life on Kanaga long ago.
