Mangiatan Island History
Founded by a Japanese trading company in 1890, Manangatā Island was originally home to the Waimea tribe. Sir Alexander Turnbull and Edward Barnes did some trading for guns with their local guides on 2 May 1892.In 1905, HMS Osprey attacked and seized two of three brigs which had been seen sailing from Kerawara under canvas late at night.
This led to an incident when Nikola Petrov ich and Maxim Mikhailovich, both members of a Russian gunboat party operating for the Maori Company at Ruavatu, claimed that Captain Beechey was trading in lots of oil with local people. The incident resulted in Petrovich being drowned by his own crew after their ship had been fired upon from nearby Manangatā Island. In 1912 Dutch explorer Sjoerd Hantzen called this island “Kjeriv Bay”.

Manangatā Island has a tropical climate with average annual rainfall and long rainy period between June to September. Average temperature is 28 degree Celsius and minimum 21°C during winter while maximum averages 30°C in summer .
