Plot

Oh Dae-Su is liberated after being abducted and imprisoned for fifteen years, only to discover that he must locate his kidnapper within five days.

Oh Dae-Su, an unpleasant alcoholic, is abducted on a rainy night in 1988 and wakes up trapped in a windowless and decaying hotel room for an unclear cause. There, his unseen and pitiless captors will feed, clothe, and sedate him to prevent him from committing suicide—and since his only friend and window to the outside world is the TV in his barren cell, the only thing that keeps Oh Dae-Su going is his daily notebook.

The bewildered prisoner is then purposely freed after fifteen long years in confinement, urged to find out his tormentor and finally receive his payback. Who, on the other hand, would deprive Oh Dae-Su of a speedy and clean death?

The Climax Of the Movie

Chan-wook Park’s brilliantly inventive and suspenseful thriller Oldboy is a mesmerizing journey into the dark recesses of the human mind. When Oh Dae-su (Chul Yeon-seok) returns home to Korea after being held hostage in Japan for 15 years, he has no idea that his ordeal is only beginning.

The brooding, mysterious Lee Young-joon (Jeon Suk Ha) informs Oh that his son is dead and the police inspector who was investigating Oh’s case has been found stabbed to death. Coerced into joining a secret private investigation team headed by detective Park Chae-hyeong (Kim Sang Ho), Oh comes to realize that his ordeal may be much worse than he had anticipated.

Overall Reviews

Oldboy (2003) Movie Storyline And Short Reviews

Oldboy is a brilliantly-made film that is sure to leave an impression on audiences. The story, characters and screenplay are all very well done, and the twists and turns in the plot make for an exciting watch. This film would be great for anyone looking for something different in their cinema experience – it’s definitely not your average movie!

Audience Analysis

The general audience that is likely to enjoy Oldboy includes people who love action, adventure and suspenseful stories. The violence in the movie may be disturbing for some viewers, but it’s well worth watching if you’re looking for a glimpse into the dark side of human nature.

Critic’s Analysis

From the get-go, director Park Chan-wook establishes one of his trademarks with Oldboy: a deep and immersive visual landscape. Whereas films like Pulp Fiction tended to be largely delivery systems for their audacious and elaborate screenplay, Park demonstrates an unusual fondness for using sight as both method (to establish mood) and ornamentation.

The camera sometimes nudges uncomfortably close to actors’ faces or circles them carelessly; everything wants to be seen, and makes its mark on the screen.

It is this unfussy exuberance that reassures viewers that Park just wants to make a good film, regardless of how other filmmakers might insist on their own interpretations or refinements upon such “simple” storytelling devices as genre conventions.

Of all Park’s films (so far), Oldboy most resembles his debut work Silat with its immediate delight in showing body-contact and action (in a small way, it recalls Song of Su-won as well). Oldboy may be almost entirely composed of set pieces and intense representations – but they all have the stamp of someone who doesn’t feel the need to put on airs or demonstrate modernist mastery.

Visual Effects

The visual effects in the movie are definitely some of the standout elements. They really help to make the action scenes that much more intense, and they also help to create a sense of realism throughout all of the film’s other scenes as well.

Conclusion

Oldboy is a dark and intense film that explores the darker side of human nature. Its stunning visual effects are worth noting, as well as its seamless integration of action and plot.

David Parker has created a film that merges elements of traditional horror with the originality and creativity shown in Park’s earlier work. Oldboy may not be one of the best action films to come out recently, but it is definitely one of the most creative.
