All Discussion Of Se7en 1995
The Meaning of the Movie
A film about two murder investigators (Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt) on the search for a serial killer who excuses his atrocities as atonement for the world’s lack of knowledge of the Seven Deadly Sins.
The film moves from the mangled remains of one victim to the next while the sociopathic “John Doe” (Kevin Spacey) preaches to Detectives Somerset and Mills, one sin at a time. Gluttony is the first vice, and the murderer’s dreadful capacity is clearly shown in the dark and muted tones typical of film noir.
Somerset, the seasoned and sophisticated but jaded detective, investigates the Seven Deadly Sins in an attempt to grasp the murderer’s method, while Detective Mills (Pitt), the brilliant but inexperienced and impetuous detective, scoffs at his attempts to get into the mind of a killer.
The Message of the movie
The escapades of a crazed serial murderer are depicted in this thriller. His warped plan entails selecting seven victims who are severe instances of each of the Seven Deadly Sins’ sins. He then sees himself as the Sword of God, inflicting heinous retribution on these sinners.
Two detectives, a seasoned veteran of the streets (Morgan Freeman) ready to retire and the ambitious new homicide detective (Brad Pitt) recruited to succeed him, work together to find the culprit of these heinous murders. Unfortunately, they get entangled in his devilish scheme as well.
Ending Explanation
Doe describes his motivation for the killings as a manner of demonstrating the world’s true awful character, as well as his desire to punish the wicked. He goes on to declare that he will be recognized and appreciated for what he has accomplished because he was “selected” to do so. As Doe talks, the disgruntled Mills explodes and yells at Doe, while Somerset stays quiet but clearly concerned.
Doe instructs them to a certain location near some power wire towers once they reach the outskirts. Doe is led out to an open area by the investigators. After a few seconds, a vehicle emerges and Somerset comes to a halt several hundred yards away, leaving Mills to cover Doe.
The driver (Richmond Arquette) alleges he was paid $500 to deliver a package to Mills at this location at precisely 7 a.m. Somerset recoils in fear when he opens the package and discovers what’s inside. Doe tells Mills that he admires Mills’ life and is jealous of his wife and the love they have as he runs back to him and urgently screams for him to give his pistol away.
He goes on to add that he paid a visit to Mills’ house and attempted to “play husband” with Tracy that day, but it didn’t work out, so he took a memento instead: “her gorgeous head.” It was Doe’s plot for Mills to murder him, since Doe was guilty of ENVY, resentful of Mills’ easier existence. He also tells Mills that Tracy is pregnant and asked to be kept alive for the sake of the kid.
Despite Somerset’s pleadings, Mills is so saddened by his wife’s death and the fact that she was pregnant that he shoots Doe in the head, Doe closes his eyes to accept his fate. Mills fires five more shots at Doe’s corpse. Mills becomes the sin of WRATH by murdering Doe in retribution, completing Doe’s “masterpiece.” Somerset can only watch, unable to intervene.
After removing a catatonic Mills, their commander informs Somerset that they would “take care of Mills,” knowing that the jury will convict him. Somerset responds, “Whatever he needs.” He also informs his commander that he will be “around,” meaning that he would continue to serve on the police.
The film concludes with Somerset paraphrasing Ernest Hemingway as the camera pans out from the desert: “‘The world is a beautiful place, and it is worth fighting for.’ I agree with the second portion of your statement.”
Was the Ending Satisfying?
In some ways, the ending is satisfying as it shows that Somerset has come to terms with Tracy’s death and his culpability in it. However, it also leaves unanswered questions such as whether Mills will be charged for his role in Doe’s death.
Additionally, it leaves us with many lingering questions: why did Doe murder Tracy? Was there more to the story than Somerset was told? Why does he care about tending to Mills now that he has lost his wife and unborn child as much as Doe cared for Simmons after killing him.
After all, “two wrongs don’t make a right.” Without knowing what happened between these two men in their 10-year friendship and business relationship apart from Bickle’s suspicions, none of this is resolved.
Movie Symbolism
There are many symbolic elements in “The Masterpiece.” One is the theme of art and how it can be corrupted. Doe tells Mills that he wants to make a masterpiece out of Tracy’s life, which serves as a metaphor for how he plans to manipulate and control her. Another is the dynamic between Somerset and Doe.
Though they initially appear to be enemies, their relationship gradually evolves into something more complicated as both men come to understand each other better.
