Disney has announced that the upcoming “Spider-Man: Homecoming” movie will be available to stream in the United States exclusively on its new streaming service. The film was previously set to debut July 5, 2019, but now will launch in the US at a later date of October 19th. It’s unknown when it will hit other countries outside of the US.

According to Variety, Disney CEO Bob Iger stated that there were many people who wanted more Marvel content and that he saw great potential for this company. He added that they also have plans for Marvel movies beyond Avengers 4, which is scheduled for May 3rd 2019. In addition to releasing more movies after Avengers 4, he hinted at big announcements ahead with another superhero project coming up soon and an adaptation of one of their animated series (most likely The Lion Guard). He said “we’ll see how those are received”.

The reason is that Disney does not own the rights to Spider-Man. Sony still owns them and Marvel only licenses the character from Sony for use in movies and TV shows. As a result, Spider-Man: Homecoming was released on Netflix instead of Disney plus.
