Staten Island is an island located in New York City, within the United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the population was 277,595, which makes Staten Island the most populous borough of New York City and the sixth most populous borough in the United States. Located to the south of Manhattan and north of Brooklyn, Staten Island is connected to Long Island by a narrow isthmus. History

The island was inhabited by the Native Americans of the Taino and Lenape groups. The first European to reach Staten Island was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524, who charted it as “Staten Island”.
