Storyline
As Batman wages a one-man war on crime in Gotham City, Mayor James Gordon entrusts the city’s security to Deputy Commissioner Jim Gordon. But as the corruption of the criminal underworld begins to unravel, it is up to Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) and his newly formed strike force – comprising Lt. Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart), Gotham City Police Department Captain John Blake (Gary Oldman), District Attorney Harvey Dent’s protege Rachel Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal), and scientists Dr. Jonathan Crane (Heath Ledger) and Dr. Leslie Thompkins – to bring the villains to justice.
Prologue
When it was announced that Christian Bale would be reprising his role as Batman in Christopher Nolan’s new trilogy, many were anxious to see what his take on the character would be like. After all, Bale had previously reprised the role in Batman Begins (2005) and The Dark Knight (2008). So far, critics have been very positive about his work in both films.
Taking on the Mafia
One of the main conflicts that Batman faces in this movie is the fight against organized crime. In particular, he comes into conflict with Joe Gambino (John Malkovich), boss of the Gambinos crime family. To take down Gambino, Batman allies with the police department and forces Joe to go underground.
An Ultimatum for Gotham
Eventually, Batman faces a much greater threat than just organized crime – namely, the Joker (Heath Ledger). The Joker is obsessed with taking down Batman and has already killed several people in pursuit of this goal. Eventually, Batman confronts the Joker in a chaotic battle that ends with the Clown Prince of Crime dead. Overall, this movie is very faithful to the comics, and fans of the series will not be disappointed.
An Ace in the Hole
As is often the case with these types of movies, it’s not all doom and gloom. Towards the end of the movie, Batman finds himself in a compromising position. He knows that if he is captured by the police he will be put on trial for crimes he has committed as Batman.
However, he manages to come up with an ace in the hole – namely, Alfred (Michael Caine). Alfred tells the court that he was actually supervising Batman the entire time and can therefore be considered an official member of the crimefighting team. This mysterious maneuver manages to get Batman off Scott free and sets up a sequel which is currently in development.
