Plot
In 1984 East Berlin, a secret police agent conducting surveillance on a writer and his partner becomes more engrossed in their lives.
Gerd Wiesler works for the Stasi, East Germany’s secret police. The film opens in 1984, when Wiesler sees a play written by Georg Dreyman, whom many regard as the greatest example of a devoted citizen. Wiesler has a gut sense that Dreyman isn’t as perfect as he seems, and he feels that monitoring is necessary.
The Minister of Culture agrees, but Wiesler discovers later that the Minister regards Dreyman as a competition and covets his partner Christa-Maria. The more time he spends listening in on them, the more he develops feelings for them.
The once-strict Stasi officer starts to interfere positively in their life, protecting them wherever possible. Wiesler’s actions eventually catch up with him, and despite the lack of evidence of crime, he finds himself in lowly employment – until the unimaginable occurs.
The Climax of the Movie
Wiesler realizes that the Minister must have known about the relationship all along and used it as a political tool. Christa-Maria has disappeared, presumably taken by the Minister to help him win over Dreyman. The once loyal Stasi agent plots his revenge against those who wronged him – even if it means betraying his former comrades in order to take them down legally.
Wiesler’s ultimate objective is to ‘inoculate’ Dreyman, making him sterile and incapable of bearing children. Christa-Maria has unexpectedly survived her ordeal by an unscrupulous Minister though Wiesler survives his own crimes as well (the climax occurs during the opening monologue at 20:13 in the Special Edition Director’s Cut).

The film is based on the novel of the same name by Martin Wiesler. The book was published in Germany in 1984 and won the prestigious Georg Dreyman Award that year. The movie was directed by Michaeldirector who also wrote the screenplay.
The film is based on an episode in the author’s life: at one point in his career Wiesler lived with a woman named Kathrin against her will. He assaulted her after she became pregnant, and used the incident to blackmail Christa-Maria into having s ex (although it was only implied that he could get away with doing so).
