What Is Beak Island?

Beak Island located in the St. Lawrence River approximately west of downtown Quebec City is a 7-hectare island and, for most of its existence, has been used as a military airfield (1968-2007).

Beak Island witnesses some 20 flights daily and therefore provides nearby airspace for more than 1 000 flight movements per year. On any given day this constant traffic light creates both noise and vibration on average nearly 30 000 hours each year.

In addition, there are several 200-metre long aircraft hangars which have a direct impact on the island’s residential and business infrastructures as well as on sensitive ecological areas with forests of oak trees covering most of its surface.

The island is located next to downtown Quebec in an area known by pilots as “the big noise triangle”: Île d’Orléans, Iles de la Madeleine and Beak Island.

Beak island is municipally owned (municipality of Sainte-Foy) but remains one of the most dense military airfields in North America : Located on a former island known to the French as Île d’Orléans, it was used primarily by American military pilots who flew outbound flights from there towards their bases; these flights were often despatched at night.

How Did The Island Come To Be Owned By Private Individuals?

Beak Island Climate

During the 1990s, it came to be owned by private individuals. It is no longer used as a military airfield and has been declared non-commercially zoned in recognition of its sensitive location and being one of Canada’s largest island groups located off the Saint Lawrence River. Its ownership was transferred from HMCS Algoma (Royal Canadian Navy)as per Government of Québec regulation dated 2005-08-22i .

What Proposals Have Been Made For The Development Of The Island?

There are several studies of the island underway, including geological and hydrological impact study for all-terrain vehicle use (study entitled: Estimation de l’impact écologique et environnemental à long terme pour les routes sur la communauté urbaine d’Ile D ‘Orléans).

Does it have links to Quebec’s history? What was the island used for in 18 th-century days?

It is one of three islands that became a jumping off point for Quebec’s history, in this case its military history. Historically it was used by the British navy as an embarkation point for sending goods and soldiers to North America. It is often misidentified with nearby Beak Point because navigation charts at the time demonstrated confusion between their two fiords (Beak Island had no lighthouse then). The island also gradually.

Has Any Development Taken Place On Beak Island So Far?

No development has taken place on the island, nor is it zoned for residential use. What happened was that in 2002 some ownership of the island came to be transferred from HMCS Algoma (Royal Canadian Navy)as per Government of Québec regulation dated 22/08-2005i .

How do most folks get there? I am always amazed at how many people have been lost! It would seem obvious this would be a popular dive ! There is a small community of islanders based on the island at present and they regularly use the short-cuts from their homes to make sure there are no visitors. From my experience, I am unsure whether this would be considered navigable territory by automobile?

No problem navigating around Beak Island as narrow cart roads do exist around much of it.

What Are Some Of The Environmental Concerns That Exist Around Potential Development On Beak Island?

No concern of mine as I am always happy to see development in and around areas of conservation. Development could trigger off anti-pollution concerns and land use issues, but on Beak Island the island is not remote enough for this; it would take a determined eco-activist who had all their ducks in a row before they are truly noticed by most fisherman’s islands starting points with long history behind them such as Granitier (Mauric ie) or Great islands Miquelon who are now starting to get noticed by developers.
