Casuarina Island was first discovered by the Dutch in 1642. The island was then claimed by the British in 1773, and became a penal colony for convicts of the New South Wales Corps. During World War 1 Australia’s first helicopter unit was called from Tasmania to build and test this new technology.

Towards the beginning of his career, Fernando Castro was politically active in Ecuador. He resided there for several years after he left Brazil to avoid exile imposed on him by the government at that time – a bureaucratic mistake from which he never retracted.
In his mid-twenties, Castro left Ecuador in order to study sculpture in Italy. After that period of time and with the new communist rebellions starting to happen around him, he settled down near Stockholm where he began painting pictures which depicted political heroes as clowns.
