Colaba Island-Everything You Need to Know!

The history of Colaba Island spans back over two thousand years ago. It is believed that the island was once part of the Kingdom of Tonk and was used as a naval base. Towards the end of the eighteenth century, Colaba was purchased by the Portuguese captain Manuel de Faria e Sousa.

The island remained a Portuguese possession until 1797 when it was ceded to the British under the Treaty of Tilsit. In 1815, during the Anglo-Maratha War, Colaba Island became a British naval base and played an important role in suppressing Indian resistance.

After the war, it continued to be used as a naval station and prison. In 1857, the British government decided to sell Colaba Island to industrialist Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy for Rs 2 crore. The island subsequently became known as “Jeejeebhoy’s Isle”. Jeejeebhoy developed it into a major Victorian port and started shipping goods to Europe from here. In 1902, Jeejeebhoy’s daughter Nellie and her husband John D’Arc Jones bought Colaba Island from him and renamed it “Jones’ Island”.

The Joneses renovated many of the buildings on the island and turned it into a luxury resort. Jones’ Island remained in the Jones family until 1955 when it was sold to real estate developer Rustomji Desai. Desai redeveloped it into a residential area and named it “Colaba”.
