The movie Dances with Wolves which was released in 1991, was a hit. But, the theme it illustrated was not a big topic of discussion followed by American audiences.
“Dances with Wolves” had the sole purpose of narrating the story of a civil war veteran coming back in his home town, and it did its job exceptionally well. The story of the movie is realistic and generic, but it also has an underlying theme that is epic and universal. It is actually a life-affirming story which is more than what you see on the surface.

Dances with Wolves Movie Meaning
Dances with Wolves is about a man, called John Dunbar and his wife. He was a former Civil War soldier who fought in the Battle of Little Bighorn against Sioux Indians, hence he got killed on the field.
However there were some principles that made him alive even after being run over by bullets: humility, bravery and kindness to others – which are qualities that can help you survive if you contract to something without thinking twice as opposed to thinking to much, like a perfect and rich man in the Civil War.
His wife is not his only partner but probably one of the most significant ones – she is willing for him to die so he can live again; because there will always be someone who has faith on you even though that person might have left your home forever or disappeared from our lives before we knew it even existed.
In an interview with Tom Brokaw , very famous American journalist, Dunbar sums it all up in one word:
” Suffering works. If a person suffers long enough and hard enough, I believe he can get up on his knees again . “( From an Interview with Tom Brokaw )
Dances with Wolves Plot The movie starts off stating that this was not the John Dunar’s story – but actually about a young boy who lost everything be- cause of poverty during the depression.
The power of forgiveness
Dunbar once told this story:
“You mean to say, a man may forgive his enemy? Oh yes – he can. When I knew that my friend had passed away and was beyond the reach of earthly friendship, it did not trouble me any longer; but one day when they were despoiling him of those things which make our claim on life good or bad (pennies in pockets and watches) the thought occurred to me : “It would be hard, very hard indeed for a man to hate me – as long as I spared him.
‘Tis only when he attacks thee and thou prevaileth that hatred begins; but if he fall down and die at thine hands , it will flower in love forever or perish with its root ”
From an interview with Japanese Journalist Natsuko Okamoto for “National Geographic”, (17 March 1997) Dunbar himself speaks about his relationship dynamics:
“The wolf must be in a very different state of mind than the Indian. The wolf can conceive not only certain longings, but thoughts and wishes which are impossible to him possessing human consciousness — this is because he has no conscience , or small one at least!
He wants things that are excessively good for his welfare, things which by human standards are absolutely impossible! Only so can he reconquer from the Indian. The wolf must not become enraged – that is how they will lose him; and it signifies little whether this takes place gradually or suddenly: in the end either way there comes a time when the maddened man must be shot.”
