A phantom ship from England?

Legend has it that one of Nelson’s crewmen died a short time after reaching the island and discovered some items washed ashore on its shorelines. Rumours have spread that this wreck belonged to English explorers searching for treasure inside forests along their way home. However, archaeological digs carried out several decades afterwards revealed no evidence of this old ship.

In July 1964, a barge owned by the local fisherman was rocked as it travelled upriver. On board were two men and five women who claimed to have been rescued after some 40 years adrift at sea on one of several baloon rafts they had built together during their trip North – Northeast in search of adventure and fortune, but peace eluded them at all costs until absolute safety finally arrived aboard.

Delta Island was established in 1971 and became a National Park in 1973. The island is located off the coast of Georgia on the eastern shore of St Marys River, only about 10 miles from Brunswick, GA.

The island is approximately 9 miles long and 3-4 miles wide. It has many large trees with an abundance of wildlife. There are approximately 15 acres of land with water surrounding it, which makes up the park’s entire area.

The island was created as a tidal marsh when the U.S Army Corps of Engineers built three dams across the river in order to create Delta Lake for flood control purposes.

The Delta Island National Wildlife Refuge became part of this effort and since that time there have been many changes to the marshland areas around these three dams due to development over the years.

In addition to the natural changes that occur naturally over time, all three dams have also altered portions of their original dimensions because they have raised them several feet above their original height and width, which has caused additional flooding issues for both manmade structures such as roads and bridges along with homes within what were once flood plain areas as well as natural areas surrounding these dam sites like forested islands on either side of each dam site itself that now sit higher than before due to encroachment by rising waters resulting from these improvements (known locally as “flood gates”).
