History
Despotiko Island was first settled in the 12th century by an isolated group of native Greek fishermen. Its isolation helped it maintain its secretiveness, as no one on the main island knew what went on there until 1906 that is!
In this year a large British Government Vessel reportedly crashed off Despotiko’s coast during World War One; however, every attempt to explore and salvage has failed to locate any survivors thus far.
The story repeated itself just 11 years later with another incident involving a shipwreck where again none were seen nor their bodies discovered.
Historians don’t refer to these two incidents but it is widely believed that Britain and France had charted Despotiko Island in the hopes of seizing socialist agitators.
It may also be speculated, to keep an eye on what other governments are plotting against them since there was no activity reported at all for the next 50 years!

The new museum is located within a former prison, built way back in 1840 due to Panslavism threats against North Greece during the 19th century.
