Spencer Island

History

Spencer Island was first settled by the native islanders in 1639. The island gradually became a popular resort destination, and today it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Bahamas. It is home to numerous interesting historical sites, including Fort Royal, which was used by British forces during the American Revolution.

Climate

Spencer Island Climate

The climate on Spencer Island is hot and humid all year round. The best time to visit is during the winter months when temperatures are cooler but humidity levels are lower. The temperature ranges from around 24 degrees Celsius all year round.

One of the primary reasons for people spending time on Spencer Island is due to its beautiful beaches and crystal clear waters. There are eight resort-style hotels and numerous beach bungalows that provide guests with an excellent opportunity to enjoy this appealingly peaceful spot. Another great asset is the use of luxury cruise ships that arrive every day, giving visitors an additional chance to enjoy themselves.

The island has no stores or services – for food and supplies you need to be located on New Providence Island which can take up 40 minutes by boat from any resort (the nearby Paradise Island has many more shops).

There are plans in the works for building a jetty at Sandy Point Beach so that guests do not have to rely solely on seeing people who walk up and down unloading their beach bags! In 2018 Premier Christie Duvall announced a new docking facility would soon open for the island and plans were made for an electric network to be installed in all of the exclusive lots.

Spencer Island Culture

The island is home to a number of Bahamian culture and traditions. The music scene on Spencer Island is vibrant, with several restaurants and bars playing catchy island tunes all night long. There are also various ceremonies that take place throughout the year which are fascinating to watch. Many years ago, a typical Spencer Island wedding involved one couple walking over to an empty house and breaking into it.

Forever Young Festival is held on the island every summer attracting locals, visitors and travellers alike who come to celebrate the music of some of New Providence’s most popular international acts whilst enjoying cultural activities including local food fairs where visitors can sample different local delicacies prepared in several ways.

Traditionally girls get pierced ears at this festival while boys are traditionally “tough”. Mr & Mrs will not exist until they have married but people still believe that tradition exists: matenal held by a beloved groom who will not be present.
