As of 2016, French Island is a part of the newly formed Maha provincial district. French Island is serviced by a detachment of the Fiji Police Force. There are no hospitals on the island, so all medical care must be sourced from outside sources. If you need to see a doctor or have any other health-related issues, you’ll have to either travel off-island or wait for an ambulance to arrive from Suva.

Getting to French Island is not easy. In order to get there you’ll need to fly into Nadi or Suva, then take a boat ride over. If you’re driving, the journey will take around two hours from Fiji’s main island of Viti Levu. French Island is only about one hour away from Nadi and takes approximately an hour by boat.

As we mentioned before, there are no hotels or resorts on the island so make sure you book your accommodation well in advance if none of them have popped up on Airbnb within a few months of going.


If you’re looking for something a little different from the typical Fijian food, then French Island is worth a visit! The island’s cuisine centres around fresh seafood – and there are plenty of places to try it out. You’ll also find some traditional Fijian dishes on the menu, but be warned: they can be quite spicy! Some travellers have even told us that they’ve ended up needing to visit an island doctor after eating some of their favourite Fijian dishes!


If you’re a wildlife enthusiast, then French Island is definitely worth a visit! The island is home to plenty of big animals, including lions, elephants and tigers. You’ll also find Bengal tigers on the neighbouring island of Ratanakiri so be sure to take some precautions if travelling in their vicinity. However, as with all things in life – there’s always chance of something going wrong so please use common sense when out in the wild!
