Harrop Island History
Built in the 1930s, Ohrbach’s Jacksonville House was the largest department store in Florida. The building itself is a little-known remnant of retail pioneers who arrived with dreams and hard work firmly placed on their minds.
When owner Junior Ohrbach retired after a life that spanned three generations, it passed into other hands through various family ownerships until changing ownership to Roy Ostlund Jr., son of property developer Bob Seagullstein ’61C’14D’, LCSW’64 whose first exploration on St Johns Island was as an 8 year old boy eating ice cream at his grandfather’s German Village Club.

Summer (July & August) weather is warm, sunny and dry.
Winter (January – March) temperatures range from comfortable to cold with occasional average low temperature in January of 18-30 degrees F. Winter rainfall averages about 6 inches a year but can occasionally peak as much as 30 inches between November and January; most years fall within the 24 inch range which is considered an excellent rain gradient for St.
