Ile Hodoul is the largest of a group of four Bahamian islands located in the southern Bahama Islands. With a population of around two thousand inhabitants, its twenty-a-year old tourism industry has taken off in recent years, drawing the attention of vacationers from all walks of life.

Ile Hodoul is thought to have been first inhabited by the Arawak people who called it Ajibou. It was colonized by the French in 1648 and passed through several hands before becoming part of the British possession in 1783.

The island’s sugar cane plantations were closed during World War II, but resumed production after hostilities ceased. Ile Hodoul received its current name from a British surveyor, Captain George Walker, who named it for Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson’s ship HMS “Hodoul” which blew up at the Battle of Trafalgar on October 21, 1805.


Ile Hodoul is located in the southern Bahamas about 25 miles east of Acklins Island and 45 miles south of Mayaguana. It measures approximately 8 by 6 miles and has a land area of 43 statute acres, making it the third largest island in The Bahama Islands.


Ile Hodoul’s natural environment is characterized by its subtropical climate, with year-round temperatures averaging in the mid-to-high 80s. The island has a high rainfall and large seasonal variation which results in lush, green vegetation during the rainy season and white sand beaches during the dry season.


The population of Ile Hodoul is predominately Bahamian with a significant number of residents from the United States, the Dominican Republic and Haiti.  Its total population is 2,000 inhabitants who reside in twenty-one villages spread throughout the island’s rugged landscape.


Ile Hodoul’s economy is based on smallscale agriculture (cane farming), tourism, fisheries and light manufacturing. Its most significant economic activity is fishing for lobster, mahi mahi and conch which are exported to markets throughout North America and Europe.


The climate on Ile Hodoul is tropical with average temperatures ranging from 82 degrees Fahrenheit during Winter to 92 degrees Fahrenheit during Summer. The rainy season runs from June through November while January and February are considered the driest months.

Culture And Religion

The predominant religion on Ile Hodoul is Christianity with a large number of residents belonging to the Baptist, Methodist and Pentecostal denominations. The island also has a small population of Muslims who reside in one village.


The official language of Ile Hodoul is English but the Bahamian dialect is also spoken.


The only educational institution on Ile Hodoul is the Primary School which provides basic education up to Grade 7. The high school students are educated in neighbouring islands.


Ile Hodoul is a parliamentary constituency represented in the Parliament of The Bahamas. Its first Member of Parliament was Honorable Vannia Aronofsky who was appointed to the seat on January 14, 2006.

The only Government service available on Ile Hodoul is the Post Office which provides limited postal and telecommunication services.
