In 1917, a German resort was opened on the north coast of the island and became a major tourist attraction.

During World War II, Ko Chang was occupied by Japanese forces from early 1942 until the end of the war. After the war, tourism increased even more as many returning soldiers took advantage of the new hotels that had been built on the island.

Ko Chang has been designated a National Park since 1978 and is now one of Thailand’s most popular tourist destinations, with over two million visitors annually.
