The cost of living can be expensive, especially for food and petrol. Health Practitioners and Health Centres

Maternity services on the island are delivered through a shared care arrangement with the community at Byron Bay and Beechworth, who have their own midwives. There is no Doctor’s Surgery or specialist-led clinic in Fitzroy Presbyterian Hospital (closed since 1983), only school referral clinics for specific conditions such as asthma etc., but misdiagnosis of complex medical problems will not be uncommon by any stretch.

Tourism

Tourist arrivals in the Daly River region have decreased significantly since February 2016, when the Federal Government announced a 15% discount on domestic and international flights for Australian travellers to New Zealand

The decline has been attributed largely to significant drops in British and American visitors. The decline has been blamed on under-employment, and a drop in holiday visitors to the island. The population of George Town (the capital) is 2200.

Transport

The only way to get to the island is by plane.

The State Government has announced that they will start charging tourists $25 per person each day for parking on Lady Elliot Beach from June 1st 2020, as part of their cuts to tourism spending. This fee will be fully implemented in 2023. The State Government argues this measure is necessary due to lack of funding for other forms of tourism such as mining and fisheries industries and to combat the predicted loss of more than 90k visitors.

Traditional food on the island includes lamb, pork, deer, trout and mackerel. There are also many varieties of fruit trees such as figs and bananas.

The most popular dish is lamb with a mint-y flavor. Traditional dishes include trebh yn addo which is lamb with mustard, camwyrd fach where the meat is then shredded and herbs are added for flavor. There are also many different kinds of vegetable that grow on the island including potatoes (still at Bwlch Gardens near George Town) and carrots due to a greenhouse effect from being between two warm land masses.

Wildlife

The island’s wildlife is abundant and includes kangaroos, koalas, emus, dingoes, wattlebats and possums. There are also plenty of dolphins and whales around the coastlines.

The climate is warm all year round with little rainfall which makes for dry bushland which can become afire without warning in hot weather.
