A little girl named Olive is the only child of the divorced couple Alan and Mary Sunshine. When they divorce, they are unable to agree on custody. They both move to different states. The movie starts with a flashback when Olive was a baby and her parents are fighting.
Alan is trying to take her away from Mary, but she grabs a frying pan and hits him in the head with it, causing them to break up. Olive grows up not knowing who her biological father is. and Alan eventually meets each other again when Olive moves back to New York City as an adult and becomes assistant director of a theater company run by Mary Sunshine’s old friend Tim Streetman.

Lydia has been secretly in love with her husband but always keeps it a secret from everyone in the town including his children; namely, Olive and Trevor who he had earlier told that they were not biologically related to one another while trying to get them closer together as siblings hereafter under false circumstances which ultimately led up to this very predicament of their parental relationship at difficulties.
