Plot
In February 1929, in Chicago, Joe was a jazz saxophonist and a reckless ladies’ man; Jerry is a jazz double bassist. They work at “Spats” Colombo’s speakeasy. Thanks to “Toothpick” Charlie, the cops raid the establishment. The escapees watch Spats and his henchmen’s vengeance killing “Toothpick” and his group (based on the real-life Saint Valentine’s Day Massacre).
Spats’ ang sees them run. Joe and Jerry dress up as women named Josephine and Daphne to join Sweet Sue and Her Society Syncopators, an all-female band traveling (by train) to Miami. They meet Sugar Kane, the band’s singer and ukulele player, on the train.
Joe and Jerry grow enamored with Sugar, vying for her attention while disguised. Sugar tells “Josephine” that she has given up on male saxophonists who have abused her in the past. She aspires to meet a kind millionaire in Florida. Forgetting that they are meant to be ladies and can’t make advances at Sugar during the train drinking and partying, “Josephine” and “Daphne” become great friends with her.
Once in Miami, Joe seduces Sugar by posing as rich Junior, the heir of Shell Oil, while ignoring her. Osgood Fielding III, an old billionaire mama’s boy, pursues “Daphne” despite her refusals. A champagne dinner aboard his boat New Caledonia.
In order to steal “Junior” ‘S “boat, Joe convinces Jerry to keep Osgood engaged ashore. On the boat, “Junior” informs Sugar that he is impotent and cold but that he would marry anybody who can heal him. Sugar succeeds in arousing him.
To avoid a messy divorce and a large financial payout when his charade is uncovered, Jerry tells Joe at the hotel that Osgood has proposed marriage to “Daphne,” and he, as Daphne, has accepted. Joe persuades Jerry he cannot marry Osgood.
The hotel holds a “Friends of Italian Opera” convention, which is really a big national criminal syndicate gathering presided over by “Little Bonaparte .”Spats and his crew notice Joe and Jerry as potential witnesses. Fearing for their safety, Joe and Jerry decide to escape the motel. So Joe tells Sugar that Junior must marry a lady chosen by his father and travel to Venezuela.
So Joe and Jerry hid beneath a table at the syndicate dinner. Spats and his men are slain during the dinner, and Joe and Jerry leave via the hotel. Joe, disguised as Josephine, sees Sugar’s lament about lost love. Upon kissing her, he reveals to Sugar that Josephine and Junior are the same people.
Daphne and Josephine are taken away by Jerry on his boat. Sugar bolts off the stage and hops onboard Osgood’s launch to leave the pier with Joe, Jerry, and Osgood. In the end, Joe admits to Sugar that he is not good enough for her, but Sugar wants him nevertheless.
Between a smoking problem and infertility, Jerry cites reasons why “Daphne” and Osgood can’t marry Daphne is his only concern, and Osgood is determined to marry her. “I’m a guy!” Jerry exclaims angrily, removing his wig. “Well, nobody’s perfect,” Osgood stoically says.
The Story Behind the Movie Some Like It Hot
Welles did not quite know what it would be like to direct “Some Like It Hot,” as he had directed one previous film, and the studio executive who financed the production was unaware that Welles had ever made a film before. When his agent told them about this prospect, they advised him against doing so until he wrote a script from which more profitable projects could be deducted.
Welles agreed with some of their concerns (noticing only after the post-production that “It can’t be done today”), but he insisted on moving ahead with this project. He produced a screenplay in six weeks, without consultation or assistance from co-writers Nat Wachsberger (who was supposed to write some dialogue) and Michael Rogin; they were neither created nor mentioned in the final film.
In April 1953, Welles traveled alone by train across eastern Cuba and into southwest Florida before renting an apartment on A1A (Boynton Beach, Florida) and making the film. His host in Cuba was a police sergeant he had befriended who owned much of his house’s land.
Although lacking financing for “It can’t be done today,” Welles secured many locations within forty minutes of his home using search parties consisting entirely of local Cubans, as well as tables and chairs borrowed from Sombrero Square Cantina Bar & Grill in Hollywood. Early scouting for locations required Welles to make three trips through Florida, two by car and one on foot; he also returned several times with his crew in order to find better-lit sites than those originally chosen during initial filming.
