History

General Toyotomi Hideyoshi unified Japan in the 16th century, ending the country’s long civil war. Most Koreans at the time did not consider the prospect of a Japanese invasion and dismissed Japan’s military preparedness.

As a result, except Admiral Yi Sun Sin, the army and navy were unprepared for a Japanese invasion. Admiral Yi Sun Sin was the only one who prepared for a conflict with Japan by constructing ships and creating weaponry.

When Japan invaded Korea in 1592, the Imjin War erupted. From the start of the war, the Japanese army, which had gained experience during their civil war, easily defeated the Korean military and advanced quickly to the north.

On the other hand, Admiral Yi Sun Sin’s Joseon Navy destroyed the Japanese naval fleets in a series of battles at sea. The Japanese march across the Korean Peninsula was stopped, and the army’s maritime routes for supplies were cut off.

The Korean government advised Yi to forego sea combat and instead fight on land. On the other hand, Yi argued that he should prevent the Japanese navy from approaching by sea.

He understood that the number of ships was not everything and that a sound plan would ensure victory even if he did not have the backing of his soldiers’ permission. He did not allow himself to be overpowered by fear, and he triumphed over it.
