In the 1870s, Mattie Ross is a 14-year-old girl living on her own in Oklahoma. Ashamed of being from a poor family, she idolizes Tom Chaney, an older cowboy who owns two horses and offers them to girls with good grades – credit where credit’s due. Chaney takes pride in his fierce reputation as one of three remaining “true” gunslingers along with Jim McMoran (Willie Carson ) and Rooster Cogburn (Dog).

Mattie, who is initially more interested in horses than people, rides after recovering from a lame leg. But when Rooster fails to return Chaney’s horse Bess without checking his reputation as one of the “true” gunslingers for himself, she discovers immediately that her newfound idol does not live up to his reputation at all. She also learns about how he eats yellow-eyed grass , the bacteria that he coughs that causes people to go all bloody, and even his ‘relentless’ appetite for killing men.
