History

Unalga Island is said to have been first discovered by Europeans in the late 1800s. At the time, it was mostly uninhabited, and many believed it to be a lost island paradise. However, over the years Unalga has slowly become popular among adventurers and tourists alike, thanks in part to its unique geography and natural beauty.

Today, Unalga Island is home to a small community of Native Australian people who continue to rely on traditional methods of farming and hunting on this remote piece of land. While there are no major settlements or attractions on Unalga Island , the community that lives there is something most visitors don’t get a chance to experience.

There are no hospitals or medical facilities on the island – but you’ll likely hear about people coming from nearby islands who need to reach a mainland hospital for assistance! This was actually one of my biggest concerns before arriving in Arnhem Land; how would I communicate with doctors if needed?

Thankfully it turned out very simple – by boat! If someone fell sick during my stay on Unalga then they took a boat ride to Port Keats , got treated, saw a doctor and came back on the boat. The only issue then was all those empty seats I felt forced to buy, given that nobody had room for an extra passenger on board!

Setting up house has become easy because there are plenty available so feel free to talk with people listed below who would be happy for either themselves or their visitors to stay with them. There is no accommodation on Unalga though so I highly recommend having camping gear and plenty of cash just in case you need to take up residence!
