Ilha Trindade Island History

Ilha Trindade Island was first discovered by Europeans in 1595, when a group of shipwrecked sailors landed on its shores. For centuries, the island was uninhabited and used primarily as a hunting ground for pirates and privateers.

It wasn’t until 1973 that Ilha Trindade island finally became accessible to the public, thanks to the efforts of an environmentalist named Alfredo Chaves. Ilha Trindade Island is a really quite island.

In total, there are only about 50 residents on the island, who are mostly all part of one Afro-Brazilian family whose names I did not know! Everyone seems to be friendly except for one man that lives across from us in the next small house – he seemed angry so stay clear as far away from him as possible.

The island itself is very surrounded by water and can get extremely windy if you happen to go down near where they herd their cows!!! There’s no phones or cell service, and due to this people are generally very friendly and helpful. I’m not a huge fan of island hopping; however, we did go to Ilha Trindade because we wanted to hike up into the rainforest and see monkeys (an entire new world).
