Ilots Niçois Island is one of the Aeolian Islands, which are volcanic islands that were formed by the upwelling of hot magma underground. The island was first settled in prehistoric times, and archaeological findings dating back to 5000 BC have been made there. It became part of the Republic of Genoa in 883 AD, and then passed through various hands before finally becoming a possession of Napoleon Bonaparte who named it after himself.

The island was later attacked by the British in 1806, and both sides attempted to capture it during this exchange of hostilities that saw Napoleonic forces lose around 260 soldiers.



Ilots Niçois Island has a Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and hot summers. The island is prone to occasional thunderstorms and heavy rain, which can lead to flooding in low-lying areas. Flora and Fauna

The flora of Ilots Niçois Island includes olives, citrus fruits, vineyards, chestnut trees as well as a number of rare species such as the golden dalmatian bee. The famous Mediterranean sailfish is also found in the area. Various mollusks are also present along with tens of varieties of birds including buzzards and bustards which can be observed through binoculars on certain days throughout the year.

The island is home to a number of traditional craft workshops, including those that produce lace and straw hats. There are also several restaurants serving local dishes such as octopus stew, pasta with clams, and rabbit with prunes. Ilots Niçois Island is home to an archaeological museum and a winery that spends all of its profits going towards the upkeep, conservation and maintenance of the various buildings on-site.

The island has several sports clubs that cover many varied sporting disciplines. The Trinitaires de Monaco were founded in 1921, with the football club having done exceptionally well during the 1970s and 1980s and being part of four Ligue 1 winning teams between 1971-73 and 1979-80. They eventually succumbed to financial issues after their most successful period but reformed as a social club before slipping out of existence themselves following poor performance again since 2003 .

They have since returned as a football team and operate from the Naval Museum.

There are no airports or seaports on the island. The only way to get there is by boat which leaves from nearby Nice every day. There are regular ferry services between the mainland and Ilots Niçois Island as well as a tourist bus service that links it with other ports in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur including Cannes, Saint Tropez and Monte Carlo. A service run by the City of Nice operates a commuter boat to and from Croisette, which runs every 30 minutes during summer and one ferry per week in winter.



There is a great deal of tourism on the island, with particular interest in its wineries and archaeological sites. The Archaeological Museum has exhibits that trace the prehistoric and Roman period on the island as well as objects from French Corsica. There are also a number of bars, restaurants and galleries. Hamamet Beach, the destination for many bathers who are not on tourist organised trips daily is also a great attraction.

Apart from public transport, there are also private operators who offer a shuttle service to and from the airport. There is also a “Vélib” bike hire system linking several of the beaches and tourist attractions on the island. The Navy Historic Service operates the largest naval museum in France. There are a range of classic cars on display and several French naval vessels such as La Combattante, avisos and lanchas can be seen docked close by or further out into the harbour at Ville Franche.

Local specialities include loup de mer, a type of lobster cooked in the shell with garlic and parsley, as well as roast lamb. In addition to its many vineyards, ilots niçois also produces a range of local produce such as chestnuts and fritters made from nuts.

The presence of the inlet and its corresponding heat assist the vines to produce high quality wines. Beaujolais, Marlborough muscat, Bordeaux reds and rose are all produced here including a grape variety known as “Voile de Chard” which produces a wine more akin to fortified Muscatel rather than any other varietals found on land or sea.

The island is also home to a wide range of wildlife including flamingos, squirrels and iguanas. There are also many birds such as kestrels, storks and hawks. Red deer have been introduced to the island for its deerskin leather production which is a traditional port on ilot niçois. Music

Several operas have been based on the island and can be heard during the summer months from several of its venues including Eglise Roches, la Cathédrale de La Trinité and étang de Berre. When combined with the chanting of the monks and music from St Cecilia’s choir they form a 16-hour, live performance every day in July and August.
