Cerrito is a Spanish island located in the Straits of Gibraltar, opposite its British neighbor – “Lisboa”. The island’s name has two different etymological origins. One derives from Cemeterio de Sefarad (Judaic Cemetery), meaning cemetery or burial ground for Jews, who during the Middle Ages were allowed to select their own place of burial, hence Cerro de la Cruz (“Sephardic Tomb Hill”).

Another derivation says that it was so named because after Columbus discovered America the Rabbi died there on his way back home to Cord oba. During the same century, when land route from Tarragona to Cordoba was closed by Barbary pirates, many of them (Judasim), came through Gibraltar and anchorage in Cerro del Trueque (“True Coin”), equivalent with modern Isla la Cruz e Inocentes (“Peaceful Together Island”).

The island has a Mediterranean climate, with very mild winters and moderate summers. Temperatures can reach as high as 35°C in the summer months, but often hover around 26°C. The island also experiences heavy precipitation year-round, with an average of 1128 mm per year.

The is analogous to that of the island, but with a slightly warmer and drier climate. It lies roughly 3 miles (5 km) south-east of Gibraltar, between Cerro de la Cruz and Calpe Point Lighthouse.

There are two harbours on the island: Porta del Sol in Isla Fortuna (“Island Happiness”) and La Villa Harbour in El Corte Industrial Blancos (“White industrial town”).

The Spanish island is noted for its culture, gastronomy and art. The cuisine is particularily influenced by the Moorish Berbers who settled there in the 8th century, giving rise to such dishes as couscous, pastilla and baklava. Traditional music includes flamenco, a form of guitar-based folkloric dance that has been passed down from generation to generation.

Some of the most popular landmarks on Cerrito are Puerta del Sol (Porta del Sol), La Caseta (The Box), Los Colgados (“The Slit-Eyes “), and Del Pelegrino (The Stork). Puerta del Sol, a gateway on the island, was built in 1592.

The island has a unicameral legislature, the Assemblea de Islas Baleares, which was first mooted in 1835. The current president is Javier Núñez Feijóo of the conservative Popular Party (PP). The island’s judiciary is headed by a Chief Justice who presides over the High Court and Supreme Court; there are also Magistrates’ Courts and Civil Chambers. There are two airports on Cerro del Trueque:

El Corte Industrial Blancos Airport (LCIB), commonly referred to as “Blancos”, located south-east of La Villa Harbour , and San Pablo Airport, commonly referred to as “Roquetas”.

Presently Cerro del Trueque has a resident population of 50,000 people comprising a number of nationalities including Spaniards (29%), British citizens & residents, Irish holders / residents and Moroccan Arab nationals (“cercanias” approximately).
