History Camsell Island was first settled by the First Nations people around 500 BC. The island was later claimed by the British in 1793 and became part of the Hamilton Harbour Telegraph System in 1847. In 1984, Camsell Island was designated a Canadian Natural Heritage Place. Geography Camsell Island is located in Hamilton Harbour, Ontario, Canada. It is separated from mainland Canada by Upper Lake Stoney Creek and Lower Lake Stoney Creek. The island is 5 km long and 2 km wide at its widest point. The highest point on Camsell Island is 272 m above sea level. The island is surrounded by several smaller islands, the smallest of which had a population of just seven in the mid-1990s but more than 100 today. The majority of Camsell Island (73%) consists of sandy soil with rocky outcrops and shrubs along some prominent ridges near Lake Stoney Creek; however, there are also numerous cedars, black spruce, hemlock, and pine trees covering much less elevation. Kite Hill Lighthouse was built on one kilometer offshore from Camsell Island lighthouse around 1911 being Canada's first two-sided tower. Climate The climate of Camsell Island is humid continental with cold winters and hot summers. Average monthly temperatures range from a low of 5°C in January to a high of 25°C in July. The island experiences roughly 560 hours per year of bright sunshine, making it one of the sunniest places on earth. Birds Camsell Island is home to more than 568 different bird species, making it a popular destination for birdwatchers. These include black-capped chickadees, golden eagles, bald eagles, ospreys, and horned lark. It is also home to endangered species such as the great blue heron and bald eagle. Permanent residents on Camsell Island include white-tailed deer, northern harriers, American black ducks, Canada geese, and raccoons who have been regularly seen in recent years during nesting season fall migration passing over from mainland Ontario into Lake Stoney Creek adjoining the island. Eagles nest at Ipperwash Provincial Park among Balsam trees located three kilometers away just off Highway 22 on Lorne Bay Road. Culture The first recorded European to visit the island was Jacques Cartier in 1534. There is evidence of human habitation on the island for over 10,000 years and its original inhabitants were likely Algonquin people. The Caribou Hunters arrived sometime during the 16th century and began hunting caribou on Camsell Island, eventually settling there permanently in 1784. The Englishman James Cook visited Camsell Island in 1778 while traveling down the Saint Lawrence River aboard HMS Adventurer. He named it "Camels Isle" after spotting a herd of them grazing on inaccessible high ground near a clump of trees on the island. In June 1788 about 60 Irish Slaves were forced to cross Lake Stoney Creek and make their way to Camsell Island by boat from French Lick, Indiana as a freshening-up period for 2 years prior to serving in Louisiana. It established Fort Henry on the mainland overlooking Ipperwash Park which was later abandoned in 1805 when ships entering Lake Ontario via the Welland Canal started using it as an alternative route avoiding local warping habitats and preventing starving white settlers from encroaching upon Indigenous land rights resulting in violence mostly territorial tragedies with four Indigenous groups laying down their lives during those conflicts: Iroquois, Huron, Algonquin and Neutral. The island has several main attractions such as a lagoon, beach, and coconut palms trees. Other tourist attractions include fish ponds, two cemeteries, two churches, and one hospital on the island. Camsell Island also has a shop that sells many necessities such as groceries and fuel for boats to travel around the island. Camsell Island can be reached by boat or plane depending on where you are coming from but I would suggest by plane because it will take less time than by boat. The island is surrounded by reefs which are dangerous to boats due to currents and dangers involved with entering these reefs but if you plan your route properly then there should be no problems during transportation of Camsell Island.
