Karlay Island is famous for its beaches! You’re sure to find a sandy beach here somewhere (most likely at one of the resorts along the coast) so you can swim and relax there in comfort. In addition, Karlay has coral caves hidden under their waters called karst swim-throughs where you can spot corals as far away from shore as 500 feet underwater! It’s impossible not to be enchanted by the beauty of this place!

Karlay Island has a warm tropical climate all year long. The temperature averages around 80 degrees Fahrenheit all year! Because there are plenty of lush greenery on this island, it doesn’t typically get too much rain here.

This is paraphrasing from the Globe and Mail: “The town’s name translates to ‘clam shell’, but Karlay Island measures only 22 square kilometers (nine square miles). At its highest point, just 600 metres above sea level, you can still see some vestiges of white settlement architecture at Kili Mua village.”



Karlay Island is known for its friendly and welcoming locals. Most of them are descendants of Melanesian immigrants who have been living on the island for centuries. As a result, the culture here is distinctly different from that of other parts of Indonesia. Visitors can expect to see plenty of traditional dances and music performances during their stay here!

Notable residents & things to do on Karlay Island The island is home to a wide variety of animal and plant life, as well as wildlife. Visitors can find wild flamingos nesting here (occasionally), sea turtles nest every year at Topping Point, stingrays laying their eggs in the shallows along the reef, eels slide into deeper water from time-to-time during feeding season—just about everything you could think of under those sunbeams! There are also lots of coral reefs that you’ll see while snorkeling or diving around these waters.



The island is part of the province of North Maluku and is administered by a local government known as Kabupaten (regional level subdivision) Ternate. However, it doesn’t speak with any respect to the provincial administration. The current mayor of Karlay Island is Agus Purba “Tarzan”.

“The island will be used as a pilot project to reforest a 100 sq km area.” says the Chairman of Ternate Area Development Board Ehudoco Adi. The island is connected to the rest of Indonesia by air and sea. The airport is usually in operating condition except for when one of the scheduled planes to Papeete experiences delay due to bad weather. However, Ternate still has a VIP terminal which is available upon request. There are also several ferry services that sail between Tarakan and Jakarta daily with an average time of 30 hours (3 days) through Palu south harbor at first destination port then Majelis Port Kelapa Mampang parking area.


Karlay Island is a small, uninhabited island located in the Andaman Sea.
