In the seventh grade, Aronofsky wrote a poem about Noah called “The Dove” for a creative writing project. After completing Pi, Aronofsky looked for themes for his next picture and decided to make one about Noah.

The screenplay was written in 2000, but Aronofsky put it on hold when he realized Hallmark was doing a similar picture. Work continued on the draft in 2003, and a first draft was finished.

Aronofsky struggled to adapt the narrative into a feature picture since the Bible only has four chapters.

Aronofsky worked with Ari Handel on The Fountain, The Wrestler, and Black Swan. They worked with Canadian artist Niko Henrichon to turn the story into a graphic book before getting funding for Noah. The first book of the graphic novel, Noé: For the Cruauté of Men, was published in October 2011 by Belgian publisher Le Lombard (Noah: For the Cruelty of Men).

After finishing the graphic book, Aronofsky signed a $130 million agreement with Paramount and New Regency to make a cinematic adaptation of Noah. Screenwriter John Logan was invited to rewrite the screenplay with Aronofsky. However, he is not credited with the finished picture.

“I believe what Darren’s aiming for is a feeling that it could be set in any moment,” Emma Watson said in October 2012. It might be set a thousand years in the future or the past. You can’t put it too far away.

The Storyline of the Movie Noah

The Storyline of the Movie Noah

Noah is a very popular movie that was released in 2014. The movie’s storyline revolves around Noah, a father and a husband. He is a well-known figure in the city of Ur who has led a very comfortable life.

His life changes when God sends him an angel named Shem, who shows him that God is displeased with the world. The story of Noah shows how God destroys the world through floods and makes Noah save his family and his friends through the Ark, which is his creation.

In all this confusion, Noah does not realize what God has planned for him and therefore goes with them after realizing that they are condemned to die by water even if their lives could be saved through a righteous life.

The storyline of the movie could have been a bit more different without the presence of God. The storyline could have had a different plot. Maybe even in opposite cities or countries and with completely different characters.

The storyline of the movie Noah is also unique because it has no antagonist. The whole purpose behind this film was to show how God destroys the world through floods so that Noah – who is deemed to be the only righteous man on this earth – must save his family.

Overall Review

Noah is a film that is based on the story of Noah. The story of Noah is a great example of how God saved the world from the evil of sin and death. The film was released in 2014, and it has received positive reviews from both critics and the audience.

Audience

A big topic of the film is faith and hope. A significant portion of Noah’s popularity comes from its metaphors on how a good man overcame his self-doubt due to evil ending up profiting in the end while at conflict with a godly man who did the right thing no matter what happens or how he ended up.

This sheds an interesting light on the difference between good and evil, symbolically portrayed by Noah. In contrast, Tubal- Cain was a man with no religion but still followed God’s will because of his conscience.

Critics Analysis

“A film of grit, grace, and visual wonders that, for all its tech-head modernity, is built on a spiritual core,” Rolling Stone’s Peter Travers wrote of the film, “wonders never cease in this flawed, fiercely relevant film.”

Time’s Richard Corliss said, “Darren Aronofsky brings out wild ambition and thrilling artistry to one of the Old Testament’s best-known, most dramatic, least plausible stories — Noah and the Ark.

The picture was not without its critics. “Darren Aronofsky’s worst movie is an epic misfire that, like the source material, offers plenty of lessons even if you don’t buy the whole package,” according to IndieWire. At the same time, The Wrap dubbed it “Darren Aronofsky’s Biblical Waterworld.”

The New Yorker’s David Denby wrote: “Darren Aronofsky’s Noah—an epic farrago of tumultuous water, digital battle, and environmentalist rage.

Box Office

On March 10, 2014, Noah had its international debut in Mexico City. The picture made a little more than $43.7 million in its first weekend in North America, more than any of Aronofsky’s previous films, and opened in first place at the box office, a first for Aronofsky. The opening weekend was also the most successful for a picture starring Russell Crowe.

The film’s opening weekend in Russia was the biggest ever for a Paramount release. The film made $1.1 million on its first day in South Korea, the biggest in 2014.

The picture made $359.2 million globally after grossing $101.2 million in North America and $261.4 million in other countries. “An unequivocal hit by practically every metric,” the critics said of the picture.

Ratings

Darren Aronofsky’s Noah received a 76 percent approval rating from review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, with an average rating of 6.66/10. According to the website’s consensus.

“Darren Aronofsky’s Noah brings the Bible epic into the twenty-first century with sweeping visuals grounded by strong performances in service of a timeless tale told on a human scale.” 68 out of 100 on Metacritic, based on 46 reviews, indicates that the film has received “generally acceptable reviews.”

In a survey conducted by CinemaScore, the film received an average grade of “C” on a scale from A+ to F from the audience.

Conclusion

Aronofsky said he was influenced in the way he directed the film by other directors’ two-dimensional cuts of Noah’s Ark, such as a cut showing people climbing on top of animals. He stated his preference for a three-dimensional ark that seems more like “a giant chessboard”, instead of a cut that emphasizes the divinity of Noah and his sin (D) like other cuts. He loved how Fritz Lang’s “M” depicts 400 people at one time in their attempt to climb down from the top rick, while he doesn’t believe anybody is supposed to fit.
