St Hubert’s Island first came into existence in the early 17th century when it was used as a hunting ground by the Canadien Indians. In 1679, Jacques de Maisonneuve and Conrad Gist discovered the island while travelling down the Ottawa River on their way to create Canada. Over time, St Hubert’s Island became a popular tourist destination for people from Ottawa and nearby cities due to its peaceful atmosphere and natural beauty.


St Hubert’s Island is managed by Parks Canada as part of their Saint Lawrence Islands National Park. The park is open year- round and features rustic, historic buildings erected over the years by generations of residents. Because it is closed to fishing during low water conditions, St Hubert’s Island offers a great place for people to fish without worrying about damaging sensitive aquatic species. For those who prefer more active modes of recreation in their free time, camping is an option at Camping Canada barren Islands located on the island which stays open from mid-May through September every year.

It has also been home over many years to various types of marine life including harbour porpoises due largely in part with its close proximity (25 minutes by ferry) to the St. Lawrence estuary.


Located just northeast of Toronto, St Hubert’s Island experiences a humid continental climate. The winters are long and cold with frequent snowfall, while the summers are relatively short but extremely hot. Precipitation is largely variable due to the location in between two major climatic zones: warm-temperate to subarctic in the south and Arctic in the north. The climate along the banks of the St Lawrence river is much milder than that in Montreal which makes it a popular destination for residents to escape their harsh winters.


The culture of Saint Hubert’s Island is extremely diverse due to its history as a French-speaking island that has been largely untouched by the English language. Visitors can experience a range of traditional cultural activities including devotions at church, music and dance performances, fishing contests and art exhibitions. Often the island is associated with exploration, adventure and historical shipwrecks such as that of HMS Grinder.

Houses of Worship

The island is home to a Roman Catholic Church, Anglican Church and United Baptist Church. Saint Hubert’s Island has no official town hall or municipal government offices but acts as the hub for most public services on the island such as operating restaurants, post office and educational establishments.

There are however private businesses that operate throughout the islands community providing many forms of everyday life necessities including shops: grocery stores; pharmacy ; mail service and credit bureau; convenience store (fish wharf), doctors’ offices , real estate agents/properties . Many residents also have access to water supply from private wells which utilize Fleet wood Springs water.

Government services

Saint Hubert’s Island operates a health center; police station; post office and two schools: the Saint Hubert’s island Elementary School and the Saint Hubert’s Island High School.


The island is popular for its natural beauty, cultural and historical attractions. Activities available to visitors include fishing; kayaking; horseback riding; skiing/snowboarding in wintertime; beaches: Jacques-Cartier Provincial Park (north) and Pointe-à-Callière National Historical Site (south); golf courses: the Saint Hubert’s Golf Club (east), La Palice Golf Course (west) and Les Trois Mousquetaires Golf & Country Club.



There is no public transportation on the island, however most services can be accessed by car. Road access to the island is limited to a small number of roads that wind their way through the dense forest and rugged coastline.
