Main Plot

The Silchester eagle inspired the first book, The Eagle of the Ninth. With his military career cut short and his father’s reputation still tarnished, Marcus lives on his uncle’s estate in Calleva (modern Silchester) in southern England. Marcus decides to reclaim the eagle standard after hearing it was sighted in northern Britain. Despite his uncle’s and other Romans’ warnings that no Roman can live north of Hadrian’s Wall, he ventures north into Pictish country with only his slave, Esca.
Esca, the son of a dead Brigantes ruler, hates Rome and all it stands for, yet he is bonded to Marcus for saving his life in a theater. Esca and Marcus meet Guern, a Roman-born Lucius Caius Metellus, a Ninth Legion survivor who credits the Selgovae tribe’s generosity for his survival. Guern relates that the northern tribes – notably Esca’s Brigantes — ambushed deserters and took the eagle standard from them.
The two continue north till they meet the Seal People. Esca, pretending to be a chieftain’s son escaping Roman control, is welcomed by the tribe. En route to helping his master discover the Eagle, Esca allows the Seal People to abuse Marcus.
They are attacked by numerous warriors, including the tribe’s leader and the Seal prince’s father. Marcus and Esca defeat them. Before dying, the chief admits to killing Marcus’ father, who begs for his life. The chief also wears Marcus’ father’s ring.
