Ilha dos Lobos Island

Ilha dos Lobos Island is a relatively new island, having been formed by the action of waves and currents over the last few hundred years. The island was first explored by Portuguese sailors in 1534, and it remained uninhabited until 1602 when some settlers established a small settlement there.

In 1763, Ilha dos Lobos became part of the domain of the Marquis de Pombal, who granted land to several colonists from Portugal. In 1822, a group of Germans settled on Ilha dos Lobos and started farming soy beans and tobacco. However, their settlements were swept away by a hurricane in 1829.

The island was then passed on to the hands of various former owners until it became an independent republic in 1908, when Humberto de Alencar e Vilas Bôas Bertolomeu Istvão Bento da Silva Neto laid claim to Ilha dos Lobos Island as his own. He donated many pieces of land off-island to other colonists and plenty more within the island itself for them all to enjoy.

After this development, new settlers from Portugal and Germany made their way onto the islands themselves, which increased its population . In 1904, a lighthouse and a berthing pier were built on the island as well. The island’s population continued to grow from then onwards, as it became an attractive resort for people across Brazil due there being so much land available to them all together in one small island.

Ilha dos Lobos is a tropical island, meaning that it experiences warm temperatures all year round. The average temperature throughout the year is around 26 degrees Celsius, with only a small amount of variation from day to night or month to month.

The island experiences two main seasons: the dry season, which runs from May to November and sees very little rainfall, and the wet season, which takes place between December and March and brings more rain than usual.

There is a short, very dry summer season, but it does not affect the island all that much as by then most of the crops are already in-ground. The island’s climate consists mainly of tropical sunshine with temperatures between 29 to 30 degrees Celsius and an average rainfall per year around 1000mm (42 inches).

Ilha dos Lobos is home to a variety of different cultures, which have all merged together over time. The island’s first inhabitants were the Tupinambá Indians, who are still a major part of island culture today. They are known for their dance and music skills, as well as their intricate traditional clothing.

Portuguese colonists followed later on in the islands history and brought with them their own cultural influences. These include festivals such as Festa de Nossa Senhora do Socorro (Our Lady of Mercy Festival) and carnivals such as São João e Carnaval ( Saint John and Carnival).

Ilha dos Lobos is an autonomous island and its government is run by a democratically elected council. The island has its own police force, hospital, schools, postal service and financial institutions. As it is an autonomous island, it also has its own currency – the Real da Ilha (Island Reaal).
